A Tuna Estudiantil is a traditional Spanish university music group. Its members—usually students or former students—sing and play folk, serenade, and popular songs while wearing historic academic-style clothing.

The groups trace their roots to the medieval period. Earlier student musicians sometimes performed in streets and taverns in exchange for food or money; this history led to the old term sopistas, connected with sopa (“soup”). Today, the purpose is mainly cultural: preserving a musical tradition, socializing, traveling, and performing at university events or festivals.

A tuna’s music commonly features guitars, bandurrias, lutes, tambourines, and singing. Their repertoire may include serenades, Spanish folk music, pasodobles, boleros, and songs from the wider Hispanic tradition. Performances are often lively and participatory, whether on university campuses, in public squares, or for private serenades. Their costume is one of their most recognizable features: a dark cape, old-fashioned jacket and trousers, white shirt, stockings, and a colored sash called a beca that identifies the university or faculty.
